Winter is not the most wonderful time of the year for your skin. The cold air sucks moisture, leaving your body looking ashy and your face feeling tight and uncomfortable. Let's not get started on lips: it's already bad enough that I have flaky, chapped lips all year round (no matter how much I exfoliate and wear heavy duty lip balm...thank you Plaquenil!) But winter pumps up the dryness by 1000x, and having the heater on when you're inside makes it worse.
So what's a girl to do? I have naturally dry skin, and December exacerbates that. Luckily, there are so many skin and body care products out on the market that cater to all types of skin types and textures. But if you suffer greatly from parched skin during the colder months, I have found the best products that will hydrate your skin and body:
I've raved about this so many times in this blog. I have a confession to make: I know it's bad, but I also use ELF remover wipes to remove my makeup (they are only $3 a pack!) I've read so many times about how drying and harsh on your skin makeup remover wipes are. But I use it to get rid of the excess, and I balance it out with micellar water to sooth and cool my skin. Using both ensures that the leftover makeup and grime comes off my face and that I have soft, baby-like skin.
The aloe vera (first ingredient) soothes, hydrates and softens your skin. This toner contains tea extracts such as asphalthus linearis (roobios) and camilla sinensis (white tea) for anti-aging properties. There are also fruit stem cells such as apple, orange and bilberry (to slow down the aging process and decrease the appearance of wrinkles and brighten the skin). This is labelled for dry and sensitive skin, and it does not have the stinging sensation that most toners have. So if you hate that, then this is perfect for you. Best of all, it is paraben-, gluten-, GMO-, synthetic-fragrance free. You can find Andalou Naturals products at Ulta, Target, Walmart, or any local drugstore. I bought this at Nugget Market, a Sacramento-based grocery chain that sells only green beauty products.
I sure LOVE a sheet mask to give my thirsty face a drink! I cannot stop touching my face after I use one (though, that is a horrible habit) because I love to feel how soft it is. One upon a time a few months ago, I subscribed to Glossybox for 3 months (but ended up canceling it), and received this mask in one of my boxes. The cranberry eliminates free radicals, thus, slowly skilling the anti-aging process. It also contains coconut oil, which of course, is one of the most moisturizing oils out there.
I love using this moisturizer in the morning since it's so light and non-greasy, but seeps into my skin for extra softness. It also contains SPF 30, so don't use the lack of sun as an excuse to ditch the sunscreen because the UV rays still hit you even when it's cloudy outside.
I raved about this moisturizer here, and it's still one of my favorite products. It has a blend of peace rose oil complex (alpine, damask and musk oils for softer skin), camellia leaf extract to calm skin, and date palm extract for extra protection. It is lightweight and rich in moisture without the grease. I apply this before going to bed and wake up with soft, refreshed skin.
My lovely fiancé, Cecilio, gifted this to me for my birthday (among other gifts) after he read my wishlist. For extra deep moisure, I add squeeze a couple of drops on my hand and massage it on my face before going to bed. It also makes my skin look glowing and feel dewy in the morning.
This is a miracle worker for my dry-as-a-dessert body. It is thick, but not oily or greasy, and it smells delicious! Coconut is amazing for hair/skin/body products, and for the price it is at $7, this is great value and will last you a long time.
I never expected that I would spend $37 just for lip balm, I swear. But it was highly recommended by one of my favorite bloggers, Paula from Thirteen Thoughts. Whatever she says I almost take as gospel. It is thick enough to protect my lips and keep them hydrated, and by using this consistently enough (especially before going to bed), my lips are not as burnt-looking (and feeling).
What are some of your favorite body and skin care products for the winter?
