Watch Beyoncé’s New Video for The Lion King Song “Spirit” - Pitchfork

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 06:30 PM PDT

Beyoncé has released the video for "Spirit," the lead single from the 14-song collection The Lion King: The Gift. The singer also executive produced the project—due out July 19—which is a supplement to the official soundtrack for The Lion King.

The video premiered as part of a one-hour primetime special on ABC, "The Lion King: Can You Feel The Love Tonight with Robin Roberts." "This soundtrack is a love letter to Africa," she told ABC News, "and I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa, and not just use some of the sounds and did my interpretation of it." Interspersed with scenes from the film are various set pieces featuring Beyoncé, Blue Ivy, and a squadron of dancers. Watch it below.

The Lion King: The Gift features several new Beyoncé songs as well as contributions from Kendrick Lamar, JAY-Z, Childish Gambino, 070 Shake, Tierra Whack, Pharrell, and JAY and Bey's daughter Blue Ivy Carter.

Beyoncé voices Nala in the new The Lion King. The cast also includes Donald Glover (as Simba), John Oliver (as Zazu), Eric André (as Azizi, one of the hyenas), Seth Rogen (as Pumbaa), and more. The film hits U.S. theaters on July 19.

There's Special Meaning Behind Beyoncé's "Spirit" Lyrics - Yahoo Lifestyle

From Oprah Magazine

  • Beyoncé's The Lion King-inspired album The Lion King: The Gift is out on July 19, the same day as the movie and the soundtrack.
  • The Grammy-award winning singer released "Spirit" as the lead single—with the music video coming out on July 16.
  • Here's a breakdown of the song's lyrics and meaning—because you know the Beyhive (a.k.a. her fans) is going to get this song to number one in no time.

When Beyoncé releases any song, you know it's going to be absolutely memorable.

In July, the 37-year-old jack of all trades released her new single "Spirit," which is featured on The Lion King official motion picture soundtrack. The song will also be on The Lion King: The Gift, an entirely separate album inspired by the film in which Beyoncé stars as Nala.

"This soundtrack is a love letter to Africa. I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa and not just use some of the sounds and did my interpretation of it," she told ABC's Robin Roberts. "I wanted it to be authentic about what is beautiful about the music in Africa."

"Spirit" begins with a Swahili chant, Uishi kwa muda mrefu mfalme, which, according to Google Translate, means "long live the king" in English. It's appropriate considering Simba's rise to power in The Lion King and the overall theme of the film, which is about taking life by the horns and not being afraid of what's to come.

"Each song was written to reflect the film's storytelling that gives the listener a chance to imagine their own imagery, while listening to a new contemporary interpretation," Beyoncé stated in a press release, according to Billboard.

The lyrics to Spirit embody exactly what Beyoncé was trying to achieve. You can check them out below, courtesy of Genius. Prepare to enjoy the music video when it premieres on July 16 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Uishi kwa muda mrefu mfalme
(Uishi kwa uishi kwa)
Uishi kwa muda mrefu mfalme
(Uishi kwa, uishi kwa)

Yeah, yeah, and the wind is talkin'
Yeah, yeah, for the very first time
With a melody that pulls you towards it
Paintin' pictures of paradise

Sayin' rise up
To the light in the sky, yeah
Watch the light lift your heart up
Burn your flame through the night, woah

Spirit, watch the heavens open (Open)
Yeah
Spirit, can you hear it callin'? (Callin')
Yeah

Yeah, yeah, and the water's crashin'
Trying to keep your head up high
While you're trembling, that's when the magic happens
And the stars gather by, by your side

Sayin' rise up
To the light in the sky, yeah
Let the light lift your heart up
Burn your flame through the night, yeah

Spirit, watch the heavens open (Open)
Yeah
Spirit, can you hear it callin'? (Callin')
Yeah

Your destiny is comin' close
Stand up and fi-i-ight

So go into that far off land
And be one with the Great I Am, I Am
A boy becomes a man, woah

Spirit, watch the heavens open (Open)
Yeah
Spirit, can you hear it callin'? (Callin')
Yeah
Spirit, yeah, watch the heavens open, open
Yeah
Spirit, spirit, can you hear it callin'? (Callin')
Yeah

Your destiny is comin' close
Stand up and fi-i-i-ight

So go into a far off land
And be one with the Great I Am

Emmy Noms Beg The Question: Is Beyoncé EGOT Bound? - Pollstar

With three Emmy nominations for her Netflix documentary "Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé" (which received a total of six), Beyoncé could be headed for cherished EGOT territory, as she is likely to receive both Grammy and Oscar nominations for her upcoming original song, "Spirit" from "The Lion King," co-written with Ilya Salmanzadeh and Labrinth.

If Queen Bey nails both an Oscar and an Emmy, she lacks only a Tony Award (T) to nail the cherished honor. The singing superstar has a total of 23 Grammys and 66 nominations, more than any other female artist.

Beyoncé has been nominated for an Emmy three previous times but failed to win, including nods for outstanding special class programs for On the Run in 2015, a collaboration with husband Jay Z.  She was nominated for two awards for Lemonade in 2016, including outstanding variety, music or comedy special, and outstanding directing for a variety special.

Her Emmy nominations for this year include outstanding directing for a variety special (shared with Ed Burke), outstanding music direction (shared with Derek Dixie) and outstanding writing for a variety special.

While Beyoncé seeks her first Academy Award nomination, she did perform three of the nominated songs from "Dreamgirls" with Jennifer Hudson at the 2007 televised ceremony.

Among the other music-related Emmy nominees were a pair of documentaries about pop stars turned sexual abusers, HBO's controversial two-part, four-hour "Leaving Neverland," which grabbed five nomination (including outstanding documentary or nonfiction special), and Lifetime's six-episode "Surviving R. Kelly," which nailed one (outstanding informational series or special), while helping to bring the embattled R&B star into police custody.

Nominees for Outstanding Music Supervision went to Thomas Golubic ("Better Call Saul"), Steven Gizicki (Fosse/Verdon), Robin Urdang/Amy Sherman-Palladino ("The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"), Jasper Leak ("Quincy") and Brienne Rose ("Russian Doll").
